‘Justice is not always perfect’: Murder charge dropped in Lubbock hotel shooting

LUBBOCK, Texas — The murder charge for Gilbert Cardona, III, 30, was dropped on Friday as part of a plea agreement. Cardona pleaded guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, which he will serve after his time in federal custody.

Cordona was initially accused of shooting and killing Joshua Gomez , 37.

Prosecutor Mandy Say explained that Cardona was in federal custody and moved to another location, which posed challenges for local prosecutors. According to Say, years passing by also made the case difficult to resolve. Say explained officials had spoken to the victim’s family and weighed the pros and cons of the plea.

“No one is really happy with this plea” Say said.

She said the plea agreement was the best that could be done to get the case resolved for the family. She said the family was very gracious and understanding.
