Lawmaker wants hearings on drug use in Minnesota prisons

(Minneapolis, MN) – A top-ranking Republican wants the Minnesota House to hold hearings after nine staffers at Stillwater State Prison were treated at the hospital after being exposed to what investigators believe was a synthetic version of marijuana. A low-security federal prison in Waseca has reportedly been on partial lockdown for over two weeks due to drug usage at the facility, and State Representative Paul Novotny from Elk River says lawmakers need to find out what’s going on. He says the issue can’t wait until lawmakers return to the State Capitol in January. Shoreview Democrat Kelly Moller says the House Public Safety Committee she chairs is planning a hearing before the end of the year on issues related to correctional facilities.
