Messiah Hampton’s highlight punt return lifts Monroe over Brockport

Almost half of the 165 all-purpose yards James Monroe’s Messiah Hampton accumulated in Friday night’s win came on one play.

Hampton reversed field and sprinted up the sideline on an 80-yard punt return during the Red Jackets’ 46-2 win at Section V Class A foe Brockport (2-1). The three star Division I prospect and No. 1 ranked receiver in New York state had eight touches for 85 yards on offense in the win. Syracuse, Ohio State and Michigan made Hampton’s top 10.

It was running back Tajmir Mullins’ show, though, rushing 20 times for 287 yards and a touchdown for the Red Jackets, who are ranked No. 3 on the Democrat and Chronicle large school football poll.

Defensively, Hampton’s Red Jackets kept another offense from scoring. The two points Brockport scored was the first time a Section V team scored on Monroe (3-0) since Honeoye Falls-Lima scored a late touchdown Sept. 8, 2023. That HF-L team is also the only local team to score a touchdown on coach Terrell Cunningham’s generational defense that has rolled over into 2024.
