On December 12, 2023, the city council updated its Ethics Ordinance to increase transparency in campaign funding for municipal elections. Previously, the city council had tasked the interim city manager to make recommendations to the city’s ethics commission. On November 12, 2023, the city council finalized the ordinance. In addition to making updates for city council members to disclose campaign contributions during deliberations involving contributors on issues before them, the updates added that candidates seeking a city council seat or running for mayor, must disclose contributions of $500 or more by adding a notation to the city council agenda in an upcoming meeting. These notations allow members of the public to see who is making contributions to candidates and in what amounts before the required campaign finance reports are due.
