UltraCon comic convention draws thousands to South Florida for a geeky good time

WEST PALM BEACH — Superheroes and super-nerds alike roamed the South Florida Expo Center on Saturday for a second day of the annual comic convention, UltraCon.

Some came dressed in character-inspired costumes that took months to make. Others, dressed only as civilians, posed for photos with the more eccentrically clad. All gathered to celebrate the characters, shows and games they love, and — if they’re lucky — snag a selfie with one of the convention’s celebrity guests.

This year’s included WWE champion Mick Foley, as well as actors Kathy Coleman and Wesley Eure from the ’70s show “Land of the Lost.” Kermit the Frog’s second voice actor, Steve Whitmire, and Scott Innes, the goateed voice behind Shaggy and Scooby Doo, made appearances, too.

About 200 vendors set up shop for those who didn’t want to wait in line for a meet-and-greet. They sold every trinket imaginable, eager to explain what made their custom dice, crystal skulls, retro games, first-edition comics and homemade stickers different from the rest.
