NORFOLK, Va.(WAVY) — A permanent memorial along West Charlotte Street in Downtown Norfolk honors the life of “daughter, writer, friend and reporter” Sierra Jenkins.
The 25-year-old Virginian Pilot reporter was shot and killed outside of Chicho’s Backstage on Granby Street mid-March 2022.
On Saturday morning, the Jenkins family, friends and City of Norfolk leaders dedicated the memorial stone and bench at Flatiron Park. The bench shares the park with the Norfolk 17 Memorial and Overlooks the original Virginian Pilot building.
“It’s very appropriate that it’s here with a wall that represents education for Black people and people of color,” said Betty Adams-Brown, Jenkins Great-Grandmom. “It is so appropriate that someone who was a teacher, who was trying to help people and report on education is here beside the wall that represents just that, with the dates [on the wall] there and the good things to get better. They’re not fixed, but they’re better!”
