Building resilience: Two years after Hurricane Ian

As we mark the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Ian’s catastrophic landfall, it’s crucial to reflect on our journey and reaffirm our commitment to a stronger, more resilient community. The impact of Hurricane Ian, with its unprecedented storm surge and $115 billion in estimated damages, remains deeply etched in our collective memory. Our region experienced a storm unlike anything most Floridians had ever witnessed. While recovery efforts have been monumental, we recognize that fortifying our communities for the future requires sustained, collaborative effort.

I’m reminded of a Naples resident named Leisy, who essentially camped in her laundry room for months until repairs were made to her home. She somehow kept a positive outlook through tremendous adversity. Leisy loves to cook and is now able to do so in her new kitchen thanks to assistance from United Way and others. The recovery from Hurricane Ian is not just about rebuilding homes and infrastructure. It is about strengthening our community’s ability to withstand future challenges.
