Slipknot celebrates their roots in an unforgettable hometown show at Knotfest

Before there was Ashton Kutcher and Caitlin Clark, there was Slipknot.

The Des Moines hometown heroes transported the multigenerational crowd at Knotfest back to 1999 on Saturday night.

Twenty-thousand fans from all over the country turned out for the show; many of them might have been there when Slipknot performed at Water Works Park in 2000 as part of their “Tattoo the Earth” tour, while others weren’t alive when the self-titled debut album was released.

Due to forecasted inclement weather, the Grammy Award-winning band took the stage at 8:10 p.m. Before the nine-piece metal band took the stage, co-headlining act Gwar energized the audience on the Pulse Stage.

Due to the forecast, both headliners’ sets were moved up, and Gwar promptly took the stage at 7 p.m. instead of initially scheduled at 7:35 p.m.

The shock metal band has been around for 40 years, forming just outside of Richmond, Virginia, in 1984. While no original founding members are still with the band, the group is still rocking.
