SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KOAM) — Remembering the day 23 years ago those who were killed on 09-11-01 the Springfield Area Memorial Stair Climb was held at Hammons Field on Saturday, Sept 21.
Hundreds participated in the 12th year of the event climbing the ceremonial 110 floors like the FDNY firefighters who ran into the towers that fateful day.
“ Each participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY brother, but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others. ” — SAMSC
Some firefighters climb with full gear and some walk the mezzanine at the stadium. Besides fire, police and first responders, families also participate together. Proceeds raised go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to create and maintain programs that support fire service survivors and their families.
