The seven-car electric trains are faster than the five- and six-car diesels they replace, trimming express service between the two cities to under an hour, Caltrain said.

The electrified line will also allow trains at 16 stations every 15 to 20 minutes during peak hours and twice-an-hour weekend trains, the railroad said in a press release.

The modernization of Caltrain, the oldest continually operating rail system west of the Mississippi, is being celebrated with free fares this weekend.

The founder of Mount Tamalpais College — an accredited school that provides classes to incarcerated people at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center — received a prestigious national award this week for her work in the prison.

Jody Lewen was one of three recipients of the Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education, given by the McGraw Family Foundation and University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. Lewen and the other two winners will each receive an award of $50,000 and an awards sculpture and will be celebrated at a ceremony in November.
