‘Coraline’ cat statue found after being taken from Portland waterfront

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 6-foot tall unicorn cat statue has been found Sunday morning after disappearing over a day ago from Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

The “Keep Portland Weird” statue, created and designed by local artist Celeste Potgieter, is one of 30 displayed on the trail. It was taken sometime between late Friday and early Saturday, officials with the Portland Metro Chamber and Downtown Portland Clean & Safe said.

Potgieter breathed a sigh of relief as she described the moment she found out her statue was found safe.

“‘Oh my God,’ I freaked. It was pretty cool,” she said. “It was exciting news this early in the morning after having my heart sink into the floor just the night before.”

It turns out, this all stemmed from a miscommunication between two city organizations, according to DPCS.

In a statement, DPCS Director Mark Wells said the cat statue was removed by a city of Portland parks employee because it was not secure at its base. He claimed DPCS had not been notified of its removal, which set off a chain of events.
