Five-vehicle crash on I-26 leaves two drivers dead, South Carolina Highway Patrol says

Two people were killed Saturday in a five-vehicle crash on a stretch of Interstate 26 that runs through the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol .

The collision happened at about 11:20 a.m. in Orangeburg County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.

A Honda CRV was driving east on I-26, and near the 156 mile marker the SUV ran off the right side of the road, according to Miller.

The driver overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle as it swerved back onto I-26 and continued to veer left, through the median and into the westbound lanes, Miller said.

The Honda collided head-on with a Chrysler van that was driving west on I-26, and debris from that crash hit a GMC Denali SUV, an Acura sedan and a GMC pickup truck that was towing a trailer, according to Miller. The GMC SUV, Acura and GMC pickup were all driving west on I-26, Miller said.

The drivers of Honda and the Chrysler died, according to Miller.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified those victims.
