Virginia state gas average of $3.00 for one gallon of unleaded fuel is down 7 cents from one week ago, 28 cents from last month, and 59 cents from a year ago, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. The average price statewide is its lowest since Jan. 27.
The highest recorded price of a gallon of gas in Virginia this year was $3.52 on April 20, while the lowest price on record was $2.92 on Jan. 12.
“Gasoline prices have been plunging lately and it is not uncommon to see them take a bit of a breather during hurricane season,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Morgan Dean. “Gasoline demand and oil costs are low, so pump prices may soon resume a slow descent. There are 14 states with averages below $3 a gallon, and several more, including Virginia, may soon follow.”
The national average price for a gallon of gas dipped one cent in the past week, to $3.22. Prices have been falling much faster recently but a hurricane in the Gulf Coast created some problems for oil production and refining.
Since Sept. 12, only Ohio (+10 cents), Washington, D.C. (-9 cents), Maine (-8 cents) and, New Hampshire (-8 cents) have witnessed larger changes in the average price of a gallon of gas than has Virginia.
