Cantonment man charged with murder after ECSO discovers 40-year-old fatally shot

A 33-year-old Cantonment man is behind bars Monday after Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested him on a s econd-degree murder charge Sunday night.

Deputies arrested Dennis Herrera for the second-degree murder of a 40-year-old man who may have been his roommate, according to the ECSO.

“We know they knew each other,” department spokesperson Morgan Lewis told the News Journal. “I don’t know if they were currently roommates, but at one time they had been roommates.”

Lewis said deputies arrived to the 8700 block of Rebel Acres Lane around 10 p.m. when they discovered the 40-year-old man dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Investigators believe there was some type of argument prior to the shooting.

Herrera is held in Escambia County Jail without bond, and a case in the Office of the State Attorney’s system does not appear as of Monday morning.
