Suspect in 2021 downtown Lubbock deadly stabbing found not guilty by insanity

A 58-year-old convicted murderer arrested three years ago in connection with an unrelated fatal stabbing at a downtown motel was committed Thursday to a mental health facility where he will be released when he is determined to no longer be a threat to himself or others.

David Brasfield, who has been held at the Lubbock County Detention Center since his Nov. 13, 2021 arrest for murder, appeared with his attorney, Phil Johnson in 364th District Court where District Judge William Eichman signed an order committing him to a mental health facility after Brasfield entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, to which prosecutors agreed.

During the hearing, Brasfield, who was deemed competent to enter the plea, appeared calm as he answered Eichman’s questions.

The psychologist who evaluated Brasfield found that he met the criteria for legal insanity, saying on the day he stabbed 38-year-old Aundra Singletery, Brasfield was “experiencing symptoms of a mental illness of the type and severity that would have prevented him from knowing that his conduct was wrong.”
