Illegal street racing led to shooting, how to anonymously report it

Police say illegal street racing led to a shooting over the weekend on the southeast side of the city.

A teenager was shot early Sunday morning on South Academy Boulevard near Hancock Expressway. Right now, officers are still searching for the shooter.

Doug Hatton, co-owner of 3D Cigars says he sees at least 100 cars parked late at night at the parking lot nearby too often. He says it’s concerning for him and other businesses.

“They congregate in that large parking lot south of us, probably every second to third Saturday night,” said Hatton.

Seeing that many cars is not exactly what he wants to see after work.

“There are a lot of them,” said Hatton. “We have to try to find different exits to go out of to avoid contact with them.”

If you see illegal street racing, there’s an easy way to report it anonymously in Colorado. The Colorado Street Racing Working Group has created a website to take those tips.

The group is made up of the following:

  • law enforcement
  • district attorneys
  • city attorneys
  • investigators
  • analysts in our state
