These charges come after the Department of Attorney General investigated a 2021 complaint alleging that former Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and Lombardini, a consultant with campaign finance consulting organization Bright Sparks Strategies, illegally used Michigan! My Michigan!, a tax-exempt social welfare organization, to fund the Unlock Michigan ballot question initiative.

As the treasurer of Michigan! My Michigan! Lombardini allegedly solicited and received contributions for the Unlock Michigan ballot initiative, which would constitute a violation of the Michigan Campaign Finance Act.
