The westernmost point of West Virginia

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Parts of Virginia may be more west than the westernmost point of West Virginia, but that shouldn’t stop people from exploring the edge of the Mountain State’s western border.

The westernmost point of West Virginia is in Wayne County along the border with Kentucky just over a bend in the Big Sandy River. The closest road to the point is Route 23 in Kentucky, though on West Virginia’s side, it is Hewlet Road.

The southernmost point of West Virginia

The closest West Virginia town to the point is the Town of Fort Gay , which lies just south of it. The town was originally called Cassville, but was changed in 1932 , reflecting its proximity to the Civil War era Fort Gallup in nearby Kentucky.
