It’s Iowa Environmental Education Week. Conferences, tours available in Des Moines

Iowa Environmental Council has partnered with the Harkin Institute to create a week of environmental education events.

According to a press release from the council, Sept. 22 through Sept. 26 is the first “Iowa Environmental Education Week.” The goal is to “foster dialog, education, and awareness of the environmental health issues facing Iowa communities.”

The events begin Monday with a tour of Des Moines Water Works.

Tuesday, Iowa Environmental Council has its annual conference at Drake University. Attendees can choose between sessions on environmental justice, health and the environment, legal engagement and more. Benjamin Pauli of Kettering University in Flint, Michigan will give a keynote address about environmental justice and democracy in the Flint water crisis.

Wednesday and Thursday, the Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement will host a conference on industrial animal production and public health, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future.
