One of Virginia Beach’s oldest neighborhood parks will get a $3 million overhaul

VIRGINIA BEACH — One of the city’s oldest neighborhood parks will soon get an infusion of $3 million to revitalize it with a bigger parking lot, a large covered picnic shelter, new playground equipment and a restroom facility, among other amenities.

Seatack neighborhood park on Birdneck Road, across the street from the Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center, is due for “a much needed facelift,” Michael Kirschman, director of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation, told the City Council last month.

For years, Seatack residents have turned out at the city’s annual public budget hearings to request park upgrades as well as improvements to the neighborhood recreation center, which is the smallest one in the city.

Councilwoman Sabrina Wooten recently described the Seatack community as “tenacious” in their advocacy.

Seatack, which has roots dating back more than 200 years, is one of the oldest African American communities in the nation. It is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places.
