Beavercreek council rejects ordinance banning recreational marijuana

An attempt to stop a business from selling recreational marijuana in Beavercreek died Monday night with a 4-3 vote.

When Ohio voters approved legalized recreational marijuana last year, it fell to local jurisdictions to determine if they would allow recreational sales to happen. Many, including Beavercreek, instituted moratoriums on recreational marijuana businesses.

Beavercreek city leaders faced an interesting decision during Monday night’s meeting as it already had a business selling both medical and recreational marijuana.

The dispensary in question, located just off of Indian Ripple Road, was grandfathered in after immediately receiving a recreational sales license, essentially beating out the city before it could enact its moratorium.

Councilmembers argued that the decision should ultimately brought to the city level.

“It’s because the citizens like a level of control,” said councilmember Glen Duerr. “Adding the recreational marijuana component came from the state.”
