Akron man gets 8 to 12 years in prison for assaulting girlfriend

A 36-year-old Akron man will serve 8 to 12 years in prison for assaulting and severely injuring his girlfriend on Christmas Eve in 2023.

James Dampier was sentenced Tuesday by Summit County Common Pleas Judge Jennifer Towell, according to a news release from the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.

A jury found Dampier guilty of felonious assault and domestic violence.

The victim spent several weeks in the hospital after the assault for injuries including swelling and bruises to the head, burns and damage caused by her hair being pulled out. She underwent “intensive rehabilitation,” prosecutors said.

“This was a violent assault with the victim still recovering from her injuries. James Dampier beat the victim and left her for dead. Thankfully she survived, and Dampier will spend a significant time in prison,” Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich said in the news release.
