LYNCHBURG, VA – Since 1970, there have been 121 reported mountain lion sightings in Virginia, but none have been officially confirmed, according to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.
According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, most of these sightings have occurred in Shenandoah National Park and the surrounding counties of Bedford, Amherst, and Nelson. Mountain lions, which are characterized by their dark reddish or yellowish-brown fur and long cylindrical tails, can grow up to 9 feet in length and weigh between 100-200 pounds.
In addition to the primary areas, unconfirmed reports have come from multiple counties, including Albemarle, Augusta, Bath, Botetourt, and Rockbridge.
Other regions with frequent sightings include Craig, Fauquier, Franklin, and Giles counties. These elusive creatures have been spotted in a wide range of habitats, from the rugged mountains to the swamps of eastern Virginia, adjusting well to various environments, according to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.
