Springfield police warn of new Bitcoin ATM scam

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield Police Department (SPD) is warning about an increase in scams involving Bitcoin ATMs.

A press release from SPD says the scam typically targets elderly victims, who are contacted by phone or via a pop-up message on their computer. The scammer demands victims withdraw money and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM.

Bitcoin ATMs are physical kiosks where users can buy or sell Bitcoin. There are several of these machines in Springfield, SPD says.

According to SPD, if a person is asked to withdraw money from their bank and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM, it’s guaranteed to be a scam. No bank or other entity will request that someone purchase Bitcoin.

If you have been the victim of a scam, SPD says to contact them at 417-864-1810 to file a report.
