Meteor that streaked across Oregon was traveling 50,000 mph, disintegrated east of Eugene

This story has been updated to include additional information from Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and NASA.

A meteor traveled across the West Coast at roughly 10:47 p.m. Monday night and made a big impression on Oregonians lucky enough to view it.

Numerous people on social media recorded videos and took photos of what appeared to be a large green fireball in the sky.

“Wife and I saw it driving back from Portland. It was pretty spectacular,” said John Merrill.

The meteor was first sighted around 53 miles above the Oregon town of Clearwater, east of Roseburg, and traveled around 50,000 miles per hour until it disintegrated about 34 miles above Bohemia Mountain east of Eugene, according to NASA and the American Meteor Society.

“This meteor was not associated with any currently active meteor shower,” said William Cooke, a spokesman with the NASA Meteoroid Environments Office.

FOX 12 News posted a video from Ann Hopper, who lives outside Cornelius, and captured the bright light at 10:47 p.m.
