Affidavit: Grandson of slain South Austin couple was ‘unstable,’ relatives said

Relatives of an elderly couple in South Austin who were found shot to death in their home Saturday afternoon had told 911 operators that day they were concerned the pair’s grandson had harmed his grandparents, according to an arrest affidavit released Tuesday.

The affidavit did not provide an exact motive for the shootings, but relatives had said 21-year-old Chevy Kyler Monaghan was “unstable” and had been in possession of a gun.

A second 911 caller that afternoon reported that when they approached Monaghan to check on the couple, he deterred them from entering the home by telling them the grandparents had been in a fight and were “in their room stewing mad at each other, you don’t want to see it,” the affidavit says.

Monaghan was arrested and charged with capital murder Saturday after police responded to the house at 2303 Brookhill Drive to check on the welfare of 76-year-old Anthony Maxa and 74-year-old Shari Mallory-Maxa. Upon the officers’ arrival, the affidavit says, Monaghan emerged from the garage, lit a joint and opened a can of soda as he “nonchalantly” told them his grandparents were inside the home without mentioning they were dead.
