Student, driver hurt when fight breaks out on Petersburg school bus; suspect sought

PETERSBURG −A student and the driver of a city school bus were injured Wednesday afternoon after a fight aboard the bus, police said.

Few details have been released about what started the fight, but what we do know is that the bus was loaded with elementary-school students and was rolling on Halifax Street when it broke out. At one point, someone else got aboard the bus, and the tensions escalated.

The bus driver was able to get that person off the bus, then drove a couple of blocks to the intersection with Shore Street before stopping.

One student was taken to Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg with injuries, the extent of which were not immediately reported. Police said the bus driver was also injured.

“We are attempting to identify a suspect in this incident,” deputy chief Emanuel Chambliss told The Progress-Index.

A message left with PCPS seeking comment on the incident has not yet been answered.

This is a developing story.
