Spokane police officer injured during arrest of convicted felon in downtown

SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane police officer was injured while arresting a man interfering with traffic in downtown Spokane.

According to SPD, officers in the area of Browne and Riverside saw a man riding a bike against traffic causing vehicle to slow.

SPD says officers attempted to stop him, but he took off on his bike. He was located near Main and Wall and an officer attempted to stop him again.

During that encounter, the officer fell and hit their head on the ground.

The suspect, 36-year-old Jacob Eckelkamp, was arrested nearby. He was booked for vehicular interference, resisting arrest, and obstruction. SPD says he has an extensive criminal history including felony convictions of possession of stolen property and identity theft.

The officer injured was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and a concussion.
