Motorcyclist dies early Tuesday after hitting retention wall near parking lot

A motorcyclist died in what is Springfield’s 17th fatal motor vehicle crash this year on Tuesday.

Jonathan Koontz, 31, was driving a Honda Navi motorcycle south on Hampton Avenue, according to a Springfield Police Department news release. Koontz crossed Central Street driving into the Ozarks Technical Community College parking lot.

After hitting a curb in the parking lot, the motorcyclist continued through the landscaping and hit a retaining wall, according to the release.

SPD responded to the crash at 2:41 a.m. Tuesday. Koontz died on scene.

The circumstances of the crash are part of an ongoing investigation.
