DNREC: Indian River Inlet dredging could begin in November

DOVER — Since the August breach, the Delaware Department of Transportation and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control report working six days per week monitoring weather, tides and perhaps even phases of the moon to ensure Coastal Highway remains connected and passable at the Indian River Inlet through the coming winter storm season.

But it’s going to take more than that, and the various governmental entities from Governor John Carney on down know it. On Sept. 12, Gov. Carney announced ordering DelDOT to add additional metal sheets and DNREC to perform an emergency sand replenishment to protect the beach and Delaware Route 1.

The governor’s orders gave a timeline of “the coming months,” and as those plans continue to come together and as the various permitting and emergency processes progress, DNREC held a community information session at Bethany Beach Town Hall on Sept. 24.

About a dozen representatives from the agencies, armed with informational placards giving the past, present and future of Indian River Inlet projects fielded questions from an at-times standing room only crowd, with hundreds passing through the hall during the 2.5-hour session.
