With Texas’ population quickly growing, city leaders looking at transportation alternatives

We’ve all noticed more people moving to Texas, and they’re bringing their cars, so one group hopes state lawmakers will look at some transportation alternatives when they get back to Austin in January.

The leaders of Travis and Bexar counties are sending a letter to state lawmakers urging them to use part of the budget surplus to fund rail projects.

Travis County judge andy brown spoke outside the Amtrak station in Austin, saying rail along 35 to connect the metroplex to the Mexican border would keep the state competitive.

The state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico’s Emmanuel Loo says Monterrery is growing quick too, so a reliable rail link would provide reliable transportation in one of the fastest growing parts of the world.

They say the bi-partisan infrastructure law would provide 80 percent of the money if the state comes up with 20%.
