Wilmington office vacancy plummets, and big stores keep opening

Fall continues to be a time for big openings and big plans in Delaware, as restaurateurs and retailers gear up for the busy holiday season – and big developers race to get approvals for projects next year.

Target will open in Middletown in mid-October. Dick’s House of Sport will open the same weekend, and has announced a roster of Eagles and Phillies and international Olympic stars who’ll greet fans . A new Chick-Fil-A will open in October as well, and so will the Newark location of Mexican spot Del Pez (see below.)

Smyrna is seeing big plans for a 136-apartment mixed-use complex with a restaurant, adding to previously announced plans this month for a new fitness center and restaurant . As always, a new crush of restaurants has opened since we last checked in. And citizens have banded together to stop the state from repairing or updating a deteriorating bridge and intersection.

In the meantime, one of the biggest real-estate indicators for business health has suddenly turned around in Wilmington.
