Hurricane Helene: What to expect from wind, rain in Palm Beach as town monitors storm

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Palm Beach on Thursday as Hurricane Helene grows stronger before an expected landfall this evening in Florida’s Big Bend as a Category 3.

No disruption of services was expected in town, officials said, adding that they are closely monitoring the storm.

Palm Beach Fire Rescue is prepared for any increase in call volume and effects from Helene, said Joe Sekula, assistant fire chief and department spokesperson.

The Palm Beach Police Department is working with other departments to monitor the storm, Major John Scanlan said. “We have our officers patrolling each area of town to report and take action on anything of concern,” he added.

Residents can expect weather conditions to deteriorate with strong winds and heavy rain through Thursday afternoon, Sekula said.

“Residents should use caution on the roadways, closely monitor the conditions and avoid unnecessary trips outside until the storm passes,” he said.

All stormwater pump stations and backup emergency power for stations and town buildings are operational, Public Works Director Paul Brazil said. The town monitors those facilities remotely and can respond to issues as they occur, with crews on standby around the clock, he added.
