Flooding prompts road closures in downtown Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Multiple roads are closed in downtown Charleston amid heavy rain associated with Hurricane Helene on Thursday afternoon.

Charleston city leaders implemented the mayor’s flood mitigation plan in anticipation of flooding. From heavy rainfall and high tide.

“In the city, flooding may occur from the 0.5-1.25 inches of rain expected today and its intersection with the 4:13 p.m. high tide of 7.3 feet. Also, expect potential flooding with 1-1.75 inches of rain on Friday, and its possible intersection with the 4:36 a.m. high tide of 7.1 feet,” city leaders said.

Barricades were pre-deployed near flood-prone intersections.

  • Barre Street – Beaufain/Wentworth
  • Barre Street – Montagu/Wentworth
  • Concord Street at Cumberland Street
  • Hasell Street – Washington/East Bay
  • Lockwood Drive – Wentworth/Broad
  • Ogier Street between Vanderhorst St/Calhoun St
  • Tradd Street/Broad Street
  • Washington Street – Laurens/Society
  • Wentworth Street – Lockwood/Gadsden
