Several emergency shelters open amid severe weather

In response to Hurricane Helene, the City of Pickens will open the Cheri Anthony Recreation Center on Sangamo Road at 5 pm Thursday for those in mobile homes and low-lying areas prone to flash flooding and damage from high winds. Be sure to bring all medications and personal supplies, such as a bedroll or sleeping bag.   There will also be room for portable cribs and playpens.

On Wednesday Miracle Hill opened its 4 severe weather shelters and Vice President of Adult Ministries, Tim Brown, said they will remain open until Friday afternoon. With 4 locations in the Upstate, each shelter provides about 200 beds.

The Greenville Rescue Mission on W. Washington St serves men only .  Shephard’s Gate on Regency Hill Drive in Greenville serves women and young children .  Spartanburg Rescue Mission on North Forest St. and Cherokee County Rescue Mission on Henderson St. in Gaffney serves all.

According to Miracle Hill’s website “A white flag will be flown at our shelters to signal the public.”
