Artists from Hampton Roads start new festival to fill in for Something in the Water weekend

VIRGINIA BEACH — People from near and far had requested vacation days from work and booked hotel rooms for the Something in the Water music festival Oct. 12-13.

The festival’s recent postponement erased one of the biggest events of the year, but local musicians are filling the void with their own festival.

Much of Waves: Mini Fest is still in the works, but it will feature concerts at Oceanfront stages, shows at bars, restaurants, clubs and other venues, and an artisan market.

Organizers BJ Griffin and Gabe Niles said the weekend lineups, locations, times, and tickets are being finalized and are expected to be released soon. However, they added, people who planned to be in Virginia Beach for SITW should no longer worry. Waves: Mini Fest will start the evening of Friday, Oct. 11, and run through Oct. 13.

Griffin said he was contacted by the city and asked to arrange concerts at the 17th Street stage shortly after hip-hop star and Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams postponed the marquee festival, which previously had brought nationally and internationally known stars to the Oceanfront.
