Future of Lakeforest mall discussed in public meeting

GAITHERSBURG, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Lawmakers in Gaithersburg are expected to sit down with residents Thursday evening to discuss the future of Lakeforest Mall.

The public hearing will discuss the Development Rights and Responsibilities Agreement (DRRA) for Lakeforest Redevelopment and expand on its current plans for the area.

The nearly 100-acre lot was left empty when the mall closed down in 2023.

“When the mall did leave, it kind of like – you know – we lost a place to like go hang out, go shop at the mall and eat,” said Ronald Steelson, a nearby resident who works near the vacated mall.

Along with the mayor of Gaithersburg, the city council is expected to exchange ideas with constituents on the best way to roll out a mixed-use development that’s planned for the vacant lot.

In their plans, developers hope to bring a transit center, 1,600 residential units, and 750,000 square feet of employment use. In addition, developers also designated 250,000 square feet of space for large-format retail and 220,000 square feet for neighborhood commercial use.
