New school, gyms: Plainwell school bond going back before voters

PLAINWELL, Mich. (WOOD) — Plainwell Community Schools leaders hope to make major infrastructure upgrades as they again ask voters to approve a bond proposal in the November election.

The bond proposal is a revision of one blocked at the ballot box in May. Superintendent Matt Montange said the new plan has cut more than $2 million from the project list.

The two big-ticket items included in the proposal are a new preschool and two new gyms, but the bond would also fund security upgrades to interior doors and windows to keep up with best practices and improvement to other aging systems like parking lots and HVAC systems.

The gym additions would be at Gilkey Elementary and Cooper Elementary schools. Both currently have a combined gym, auditorium and cafeteria.

“We have to have really tight schedules for our students with gym class and our teachers, so we have enough time to get our custodians in so we can set up for gym and then be able to do a quick clean before we start gym class again,” Cooper Elementary School Principal Nicole Keorkunian said.
