Local heroes to be honored at award ceremony

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — From first responders to those in the armed forces, several local heroes are set to be honored at an award ceremony aboard the USS Midway Museum on Friday.

The American Red Cross of San Diego and Imperial Counties are hosting the 22nd Annual Real Heroes Awards, which recognizes individuals and organizations that “embody the mission and spirit of the Red Cross by saving lives and creating safer, stronger and more resilient communities.”

Here’s a break down of those in the local community who will be receiving awards:

Disaster Services Hero Robert Gladysz : Officer Gladysz, a member of the San Diego Police Department and a former U.S. Marine, displayed remarkable heroism during the historic floods in San Diego on Jan. 22, 2024.

First Responder Hero Steven Hannibal : On Feb. 29, 2024, Officer Steven Hannibal of the El Cajon Police Department displayed extraordinary bravery during an active shooter incident at Smile Dentistry.
