Habitat for Humanity raises income guidelines for home applications

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The 2024 homeownership application period for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls opens on October 1st.

Every year, the organization helps families get into affordable homes. Elizabeth Denoyer has been the proud owner of her Habitat home for a year now.

“A three bedroom house is just not affordable on one income in Sioux Falls, so yeah that’s one thing that’s good about Habitat. They make it very affordable,” Denoyer said.

“So we’re kind of serving a segment of our community that can afford a mortgage but can’t afford today’s market,” Lisa Ross, homeowner services coordinator with Habitat for Humanity of Great Sioux Falls, said. “So they can’t afford the homes that are for sale with a traditional bank loan. There’s a whole lot of people in that category.”

Now Habitat for Humanity wants to help even more people.

“Everybody has seen that the cost of living has definitely increased over the past few years,” Ross said. “So, in order for people to afford the homes that we’re selling, right now we’ve had to bump up our income range. So, we’re serving people 45 to 75 percent of area median income.”
