Southwest Airlines Revamps Interiors
Southwest Airlines is planning major changes to its aircraft cabins over the next two years. The overhaul includes redesigned interiors for its 800 existing planes.
New Features for Passengers
Passengers will notice new seat trays, device trays, and charging ports in every seat. For an additional fee, travelers can opt for premium seating with extra legroom.
Assigned Seating
After 50 years of open seating, Southwest will introduce assigned seating. This change will be implemented in the second half of 2025 for flights in the first half of 2026.
Meeting Changing Needs
The renovations aim to address evolving passenger preferences and boost the airline’s profitability. CEO Bob Jordan said, "Consumer preferences have changed, and the way we fly has changed."
FAA Approval Pending
The new cabin designs are subject to approval by the Federal Aviation Administration. Once approved, the redesigned cabins are expected to be available in the first half of 2026.
