Montgomery Fire/Rescue honors employees at annual cookout

Appreciation burned bright on Friday for Montgomery’s firefighters.

The people who would walk into an inferno to save lives, and department staff who serve with them, were honored for their efforts at the 3rd annual Employee Appreciation Day at Fire/Rescue Headquarters. It was Fire Chief Milford Jordan’s way to recognize everything they’ve done for the department over the past year.

“We just truly try to show some appreciation to our employees, and just let them know that their work does not go unnoticed,” said Assistant Fire Chief S.L. Cooper.

The MFR Cooking Team — made up of Assistant Fire Chief Daryl Thornton, Captain Quinton Robinson, Captain Thavone Phengphanh, Captain Travis Varner and District Fire Chief Matt Morgan — worked with fire to grill for everyone, along with making sides and desserts. MFR members set up and served the meal.

It was a working day of celebration.

Just after 3 p.m. Friday, MFR responded to a house fire at the 300 block of Truett Drive. The single-story residence had heavy smoke visible, and fire crews made entry. They searched the building and extinguished the flames using hand lines. That fire is under investigation. Fortunately, no one was injured — civilians or firefighters — and MFR’s people returned to await their next call.
