KOIN 6 team cleans up Broughton Beach with SOLVE

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Dozens of volunteers mobilized on the banks of Broughton Beach in Northeast Portland Saturday morning, cleaning up litter of all sizes along the shores.

This is a part of environmental nonprofit SOLVE ‘s annual Beach & Riverside Cleanup, an event that has become “a model for cleanup efforts nationwide and globally,” according to the organization.

“People have really been recreating over the summer,” said SOLVE CEO Kris Carico. “And so it’s really important that we clean up some of the debris that’s on the beach itself, but also the bike path which is well-loved and people want to ride that, so we want to make sure it’s clean for everybody to enjoy.”

While the event officially began Sept. 21, Saturday’s cleanup was one of around 70 events taking place across the state.

Among the 34 volunteers were some familiar faces, including KOIN 6 anchor Emily Burris, as well as reporters Emma Jerome and Elise Haas.

The nonprofit said overall, the cleanup yielded around 200 pounds of trash.
