Referee says hit that injured Colts QB Anthony Richardson was ‘incidental’ contact

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts have already expressed concerns about the way Anthony Richardson is being officiated this season .

The hit Richardson took on the final snap he played in Sunday’s 27-24 win over Pittsburgh isn’t likely going to make Indianapolis feel any better.

Feeling a lack of explosiveness in his right hip, Richardson gave himself up as he headed around the left side of the line, only to take a hit to the head and neck area from veteran Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

No flag was thrown on the play.

Doyel: Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will play like he plays. He’ll survive, or he won’t.

“We ruled the contact was incidental,” referee Land Clark said. “It was not enough force to warrant a flag.”

The Colts have already disagreed with NFL rulings on hits Richardson has taken this season.

Richardson was flipped around and slammed to the turf by Texans defender Mario Edwards in the season opener, then later took a blow to the head from Houston quarterback Kwame Lassiter, prompting Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen to say that the Colts were submitting the plays for review by the league.
