VBPD: Crews coming home after assisting with relief efforts

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach Fire Department Swiftwater Rescue Team has received demobilization orders early Sunday afternoon after helping with Hurricane Helene.

The team helped rescue two people, a dog and helped residents to shelter in place in southwestern Virginia amid flooding and damages to that region Friday.

The crew is now en route home to the Harry E. Diezel Fire Training Center.

Virginia Beach EMS also sent two ambulances that included career medics and a volunteer provider. They are currently in Abingdon.

“In the short time they’ve been there, they have reunited several families, assisted in off-loading Blackhawk helicopters, helped transition victims to the command post, and provided medical supplies to those in dire need.”
