Hononegah’s Kylie Simpson, Landon Samuelson top area finishers at Midwest Invitational

JANESVILLE — The Hononegah cross country team’s top runners ensured that the Indians were well-represented at the 86th annual Midwest Invitational hosted by Janesville Craig at Blackhawk Golf Course on Saturday.

Junior Kylie Simpson finished 18th out of 305 girls’ runners while junior Landon Samuelson took the 18th spot as well in a race featuring 358 boys’ runners.

Simpson ran the tricky course in a flat 19 minutes while Samuelson finished in 16:01.9.

Deerfield/Cambridge’s Emmerson Drobac won the girls’ race with a time of 17:45.9, nearly 30 seconds faster than second-place Mazie Olkowski of Neenah. De Pere’s Grady Lenn also had a comfortable finish for the boys, winning in 15:03.9 over Woodstock’s Ellery Shutt (15:34.6).

Hononegah freshman Jack McLarty had a strong race, placing 109th with a time of 17:14.5. Oliver Filimonov was the next Indian across in 17:43.0.

Keila Borges Aragon was stout for Hononegah’s girls with her 60th-place finish (20:18.0). Averi Bronnimann was next at 116th (21:11.2).
