Homicide case will stretch into next year

PUNTA GORDA — A trial for the man accused of shooting and killing his grandfather is likely a long-way off, according to his defense attorney.

Joshua Nareau, 23, appeared in Charlotte County Court with his attorney Scott Moorey on Tuesday for a case management hearing.

Moorey told Circuit Court Judge Shannon McFee that depositions in the case have been planned out to November, making any future hearings before the end of the year unlikely.

Nareau was arrested by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, who allege that he fired the bullet that led to the death of Jim Khourey, his grandfather, last December.

The arrest came after weeks of investigation and public interest in the homicide.

However, Nareau’s family has argued for his innocence and even posted his bond after he was arraigned.

McFee also denied prosecutor’s previous motion to deny Nareau bond, citing what he saw as discrepancies in investigators’ description of how bullets traveled at the crime scene.

Nareau has been charged with second-degree homicide and has pleaded not guilty. He is currently released from jail on $150,000 bond.
