The ‘transformative’ Union City plan to make the town more ‘welcoming’

UNION CITY — Union City is shining a light — actually more than 1,500 lights — on its downtown.

LED lights fixed atop almost every downtown building in the borough come on at about 7:30 p.m. and go off at midnight each night.

The lights were first lit for Union City Homecoming in September.

“I was taken aback at the effect and how it transformed the look of the downtown at night,” said Steve Bishop, a project manager with the Union City Community Foundation. “The lights tie the downtown together at night, highlight the skyline of our turn-of-the-century buildings, bring out architectural detail you don’t notice during the day, and make the downtown feel more inviting and welcoming at night.

“It’s a very cool effect.”

The lights are the latest initiative in a series of downtown revitalization projects that include murals and the creation of a gateway area at the site of the former Union City Dinor.

“I’ve always thought of this project as the icing on cake,” Bishop said.
