While Tropical Storm Helene wiped out most of the Week 7 slate, a handful of Class 2A teams got their games in. One of those was the Spencer Greenwave Owls, who beat Kendrick 55-14 in a Region 1 contest. The game was played on Wednesday, though luckily the week before was a Thursday game, giving them an extra day of rest than if they’d played on a Friday.
Owls coach Joe Kegler said Muscogee County School District athletic director Jeff Battles made the call on Tuesday to push this week’s games up. Had the game been postponed, Kegler said the Owls would have played Oct. 11, their scheduled bye week.
In Wednesday’s win, the Owls were led by senior Justyn Williams, who had 118 yards and three touchdowns on just seven carries. Sophomore quarterback Elijah Fudge was 6 of 9 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and his top targets, seniors Demarcus Horne and Caylen Brunson, had 65 receiving yards apiece. Sophomore CJ Star led the defense with 10 tackles, four for loss.
“We were efficient,” Kegler said. “We did a good job of executing the game plan on a short week. We’re just trying to get better every week, and as long as we build on the week before, we’ll be fine, and we’ll be where we want to be when the regular season ends.”
