In-Shape gym kidnapping defendant arraigned, second suspect to be arraigned Tuesday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — One of two suspects was arraigned in court Monday on charges of kidnapping and raping a woman in northwest Bakersfield as she was coming out of the In-Shape gym on Coffee Road.

On a December morning in the parking lot of the gym, a local woman got into her car after a workout and was getting ready to drive home. Then, a masked man came up to her car, pointed a gun, and ordered her into the passenger seat.

The alleged kidnapping lasted hours, he drove her to two banks and forced her to withdraw money. Police reports say he took her to an orchard near Taft and raped her. He left her at the Vallarta Supermarket on Panama Lane, warning her not to contact the police or cancel her credit cards.

He allegedly told her, “Happy holidays” as he drove away. She immediately ran inside and got help. He was arrested in her car the same day after a short police chase.

The defendant is 42-year-old Vincent Zavier DeLeon, who was arraigned in court and pleaded not guilty.
